定語從句是考研英語翻譯這個模塊每年都會必考的內(nèi)容，不管考英語一還是英語二的翻譯，這個知識點(diǎn)是考生一定要掌握的內(nèi)容，根據(jù)對92年到2011年所有英語一翻譯真題的數(shù)據(jù)統(tǒng)計(jì)，在考察的100個句子中，考過48個定語從句，其中12個that引導(dǎo)的，22個which引導(dǎo)的，7個who,whom和whose引導(dǎo)的，比較后還有7個省略引導(dǎo)詞或由when、where引導(dǎo)的定語從句。通過這個數(shù)據(jù)再次印證了這個知識點(diǎn)的重要性。

　　在考研翻譯中定語從句比較常用的兩種翻譯方法是：前置法和后置法。

　　1.前置法

　　所謂前置法，即把定語從句翻譯到所修飾的先行詞前面，可以用"的"來連接。通常適用于比較短的定語從句。

　　(2003年，61題)：Furthermore, humans have the ability to modify the environment in which they live, thus subjecting all other life forms to their own peculiar ideas and fancies。

　　句子結(jié)構(gòu)：in which they live是"介詞+which"引導(dǎo)的定語從句，還原后為which they live in，修飾先行詞environment，比較短可以采用前置的方法進(jìn)行翻譯。

　　參考譯文：人類有能力改造他們所居住的環(huán)境，從而使所有其他生命形態(tài)服從于人類自己特有的想法和想象。

　　(2004年，62題)：We are obliged to them because some of these languages have since vanished, as the peoples who spoke them died out or became assimilated and lost their native languages。

　　句子結(jié)構(gòu)：who引導(dǎo)定語從句修飾peoples。從句很短，可以用前置法，翻譯成"…的"。peoples為"民族，種族"。這個從句可譯為"說這些語言的民族"。be obliged to sb意思是"感謝/感激某人"。

　　參考譯文：我們之所以感激這兩位先驅(qū)，是因?yàn)樵诖酥�后這些語言有一些已經(jīng)不復(fù)存在了，這是由于說這些語言的部族或是消亡了，或是被同化而喪失了自己的本族語言。

　　2.后置法

　　所謂后置就是把定語從句翻譯在所修飾的先行詞后面，翻譯成并列分句。非限制性定語從句多采用此譯法。通常適用于比較長或者比較復(fù)雜的定語從句，兩種方法如何選擇，以通順為前提進(jìn)行選擇。

　　(2001年，73題)：Pearson has pieced together the work of hundreds of researchers around the world to produce a unique millennium technology calendar that gives the latest dates when we can expect hundreds of key breakthroughs and discoveries to take place.

　　句子結(jié)構(gòu)：that引導(dǎo)的定語從句修飾先行詞millennium technology calendar。when引導(dǎo)定語從句，修飾the latest dates。很明顯，that引導(dǎo)的定語從句比較長，采用后置法，即使用代詞代替先行詞。when引導(dǎo)的定語從句嵌套在了that引導(dǎo)的定語從句里面，既然that引導(dǎo)的定語從句采用了后置法獨(dú)立成句，如果when引導(dǎo)的定語從句也采用后置法的話，就容易產(chǎn)生邏輯混亂，所以when引導(dǎo)的這個定語從句還是采用前置法，譯為"…的"。主句為Pearson has pieced together the work of hundreds of researchers around the world to produce a unique millennium technology calendar，其中to produce a unique millennium technology calendar是不定式做目的狀語。

　　參考譯文：皮爾森匯集了世界各地?cái)?shù)百位研究人員的研究成果，編制了一個獨(dú)特的技術(shù)千年歷，這個技術(shù)千年歷給出了我們希望看到的數(shù)百項(xiàng)重大突破和發(fā)現(xiàn)發(fā)生的比較晚的日期。

　　(2003年，62題)：Social science is that branch of intellectual enquiry which seeks to study humans and their endeavors in the same reasoned, orderly, systematic, and dispassioned manner that natural scientists use for the study of natural phenomena.

　　句子結(jié)構(gòu)：這句話的主句是Social science is that branch of intellectual enquiry。本句有兩個定語從句，一個是which引導(dǎo)的，先行詞是social science，另一個是manner后面的that引導(dǎo)的，修飾manner。which引導(dǎo)的從句很長，明顯需要采用后置法。而manner前面的修飾詞reasoned, orderly, systematic, and dispassioned已經(jīng)很多了，如果把that從句再前置，manner就會不堪重負(fù)了，所以也應(yīng)該采用后置法。

　　參考譯文：社會科學(xué)是知識探索的一個分支，它試圖用理性，有序，系統(tǒng)，冷靜的方式研究人類及其行為，而自然科學(xué)家就是用同樣的方式研究自然現(xiàn)象的。

　　再補(bǔ)充兩種不太常用的定語從句翻譯法：融合法和狀譯法。

　　1. 融合法

　　即把主句和定語從句融合成一個簡單句，定語從句譯成謂語部分，多適用于限制性定語從句，尤其是“There be”句型。

　　In our factory, there are many people who are much interested in the new invention.

　　在我們工廠里，許多人對這項(xiàng)新發(fā)明很感興趣。

　　She had a balance at her banker's which would have made her beloved anywhere.

　　她在銀行里的存款足以使她到處受到歡迎。

　　2. 狀譯法

　　一些定語從句兼有狀語從句的功能，在意義上與主句與狀語關(guān)系，表明原因、結(jié)果、目的、讓步等關(guān)系。

　　A driver who is driving the bus mustn't talk with others or be absent-minded.

　　司機(jī)開車時(shí)，不許和他人談話，也不能走神。

　　Men become desperate for work , any work, which will help them to keep alive their families.

　　人們極其迫切地要求工作，不管什么工作，只要它能維持一家人的生活就行。

　　They tried to stamp out the revolt, which spread all the more furiously throughout the country.
