Directions:The following paragraphs are given in a wrong order for Questions 41-45,you are required to reorganize these paragraphs into a coherent article by choosing from the list A-E to fill in each numbered box. The first and the last paragraphs have been placed for you in Boxes. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.(10 points)

[A]“I just don‘t know how to motivate them to do a better job. We’re in a budget crunch and I have absolutely no financial rewards at my disposal. In fact, we‘ll probably have to lay some people off in the near future. It’s hard for me to make the job interesting and challenging because it isn‘t—it’s boring, routine paperwork, and there isn‘t much you can do about it. [B]”Finally, I can’t say to them that their promotions will hinge on the excellence of their paperwork. First of all, they know it‘s not true. If their performance is adequate, most are more likely to get promoted just by staying on the force a ion, and the apprehension of criminals. They also like helping people out at fires, accidents, and other emergencies. [D]“Some people have suggested a number of things like using conviction records as a performance criterion. However, we know that’s not fair—too many other things are involved. Bad paperwork increases the chance that you lose in court, but good paperwork doesn‘t necessarily mean you’ll win. We tried setting up team competitions based on the excellence of the reports, but the guys caught on to that pretty quickly. No one was getting any type of reward for winning the competition, and they figured why should they labor when there was no payoff.”

[E]“The problem occurs when they get back to the station. They hate to do the paperwork, and because they dislike it, the job is frequently put off or done inadequately. This lack of attention hurts us later on when we get to court. We need clear, factual reports. They must be highly detailed and unambiguous. As soon as one part of a report is shown to be inadequate or incorrect, the rest of the report is suspect. Poor reporting probably causes us to lose more cases than any other factor. [F]”So I just don‘t know what to do. I’ve been groping in the dark in a number of years. And I hope that this seminar will shed some light on this problem of mine and help me out in my future work.“

[G]A large metropolitan city government was putting on a number of seminars for administrators, manager s and/or executives of various departments throughout the city. At one of these sessions the topic to be discussed was motivation—how we can get public servants motivated to do a good job. The difficulty of a police captain became the central focus of the discussion. 尾段是一個(gè)引語(yǔ):So I just don‘t know what to do. I’ve been groping in the dark in a number of years. And I hope that this seminar will shed some light on this problem of mine and help me out in my future work(所以我不知道該怎么辦。

I‘ve got a real problem with my officers(警員們現(xiàn)在出現(xiàn)了問(wèn)題),而且與首段的比較后一句The difficulty of a police captain became the central focus of the discussion(這個(gè)研討會(huì)上一個(gè)警察局警長(zhǎng)的難題成了討論的焦點(diǎn))連接自然,因?yàn)槭锥蔚奈簿涮岬搅司炀珠L(zhǎng)的difficulty(困難),后面的段落肯定會(huì)對(duì)這一困難作出解釋?zhuān)虼薣C]段中的problem和首段的difficulty呼應(yīng),應(yīng)當(dāng)是正確答案。

  42. 「解析」[E] [C]段的第一句話(huà)I‘ve got a real problem with my officers(警員們現(xiàn)在出現(xiàn)了問(wèn)題)和后面的句子They come on the force as young, inexperienced men, and we send them out on the street, either in cars or on a heat. They seem to like the contact they have with the public, the action involved in crime prevention, and the apprehension of criminals. They also like helping people out at fires, accidents, and other emergencies(他們到大街上巡邏……,他們喜歡與公眾交流……,他們也喜歡樂(lè)于助人……) [C]段先表?yè)P(yáng)職員對(duì)公眾的事積極、熱心,但是“The problem occurs when they get back to the station”(一回到警局問(wèn)題就出現(xiàn)了)。同時(shí),從詞匯銜接上來(lái)看,[E]段中的單詞get back和上一段落中的out構(gòu)成了對(duì)應(yīng)關(guān)系,說(shuō)明了警員們?cè)诰渫饷婧屠锩娴牟煌憩F(xiàn),因此從這兩個(gè)方面來(lái)看,選項(xiàng)[E]是正確答案。

They hate to do the paperwork …Poor reporting probably cause us to lose more cases than any other factor(他們不喜歡寫(xiě)公文…… 根據(jù)選項(xiàng)[E]比較后一句話(huà)的語(yǔ)義,接下來(lái)作者要談?wù)摰膯?wèn)題一定和此問(wèn)題有關(guān),因此可以對(duì)比剩余的三個(gè)選項(xiàng)[A]、[B]和[D],首先可以排除選項(xiàng)[D] Some people have suggested a number of things like using conviction records as a performance criterion…,因?yàn)檫@個(gè)選項(xiàng)提出了評(píng)判警員的標(biāo)準(zhǔn),是一個(gè)解決問(wèn)題的辦法,和前面提到的問(wèn)題以及導(dǎo)致的結(jié)果在語(yǔ)義上不銜接。

比較選項(xiàng)[A]和[B],選項(xiàng)[A]的首句I just don‘t know how to motivate them to do a better job,提出了警察局長(zhǎng)在這個(gè)問(wèn)題上的困惑,單詞better是一個(gè)比較級(jí),和前一個(gè)段落末句中的poor相呼應(yīng), 因此是正確答案。

Some people have suggested a number of things like using conviction records as a performance criterion. However, we know that‘s not fair—too many other things are involved是說(shuō)雖然有人提出了建議,但這些措施是不可能被實(shí)施的。
